1926-2026: Centenary of the Haguenau War Memorial
The City of Haguenau is organizing a varied program to mark the centenary of the 1918 armistice. Several events are scheduled from Friday, November 6 to Wednesday, November 11, blending memory, culture, and emotion.
On Friday, November 6 at 8 p.m., a conference titled "The History and Symbolism of War Memorials" will be held at the IFSI, 21 rue de la Redoute. Hosted by the Haguenau Society of History and Archaeology (SHAH), it will last two hours.
On Saturday, November 7, two main events will punctuate the day. At 5:30 p.m., an official ceremony will take place at the War Memorial in Parc de l’Horloge, featuring the transmission of the Flame of the Nation from Paris. At 8 p.m., the Salle de la Douane will host the concert-show "Le Cabaret du Poilu," presented by the Compagnie Sans Lézard. This free show, by reservation, combines period songs and Great War stories, evoking the lives of soldiers and civilians with humor and emotion.
On Wednesday, November 11 at 11:15 a.m., a commemorative ceremony for the 1918 armistice will be held at the War Memorial in Parc de l’Horloge.
Meanwhile, four exhibitions are open from November 6 to 11. At the War Memorial, "Bronze Memory: The Genesis of the Haguenau War Memorial" traces its history thanks to the Museum-Archives Service. At the Historical Museum, three other exhibitions are offered: "The Sculptural Art of War Memorials" by the Souvenir Français, with a free guided tour on Sunday, November 8 at 3 p.m.; "The Haguenau War Memorial Through Postcards" by the Society of Postcard Collectors; and "Drawings and Models Around the Symbolism of Commemorative Monuments," created by CM1-CM2 students from the Musau, Saint-Nicolas, and Vieille-Île schools in collaboration with the Souvenir Français. The Historical Museum will be exceptionally open on Monday, November 9 and Tuesday, November 10. Access to the exhibitions is free upon presentation at reception, while permanent exhibitions are accessible for €5 (reduced €3).
