A Tire-d'aile. Anna Sommer in Dialogue with the Collections
The Tomi Ungerer Museum hosts the first solo exhibition in France of Anna Sommer, the 2024 laureate of the prestigious Max and Moritz Award recognizing the best German-speaking comic author.
Over the decades, Anna Sommer has developed a unique style where images serve as a tool to explore human relationships, romantic conflicts, and identity questions. Her creations, whether collage portraits, short illustrated stories, comics, or humorous engravings, play on a subtle tension between humor, discomfort, and symbolic depth.
For this carte blanche, Anna Sommer has chosen to create a dialogue between her own works and those of Tomi Ungerer, whom she draws inspiration from and reinterprets. She has also selected pieces from other artists from various collections: works by Tomi Ungerer and Borislav Sajtinac from the Tomi Ungerer Museum, drawings by Marcelle Cahn and Käthe Kollwitz from the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, as well as prints by Toshusai Sharaku and Kitagawa Utamaro from the Cabinet of Prints and Drawings.
This subjective confrontation reveals the multiple echoes that unite these creations, transcending genres, styles, and eras.
