Opera: Pelléas and Mélisande
In the heart of a dark forest beside a pond, Prince Golaud encounters Mélisande, a mysterious young woman. Moved by her beauty and intrigued by the secrets surrounding her, he marries her. Their arrival at the castle of Allemonde draws the attention of all its inhabitants: Arkel, the blind but insightful grandfather; Geneviève, Golaud's mother; Yniold, a manipulated child; and Pelléas, Golaud's half-brother and Mélisande's tender companion.
Gradually, the relationship between Pelléas and Mélisande blossoms, nourished by dreams and innuendos, while Golaud's jealousy intensifies, leading to palpable dramatic tension.
This story, rich in symbolism, explores themes such as confinement and the decline of power. Richard Brunel's staging draws inspiration from the architecture of a sanatorium and a panopticon to illustrate this oppressive world. Debussy's music, with its evanescent harmonies and intimate colors, enhances the dreamlike atmosphere of the work. In the pit, Louis Langrée conducts this demanding score, supported by exceptional performers, including Stéphane Degout, who alternately embodies Pelléas and Golaud.
