12th Century Romanesque Church of St. James
The Feldbach church, a Romanesque gem of Sundgau, is a remarkable building dating back to 1144. It was designed by Count Frédéric I of Ferrette as a burial place for himself and his family. Classified as a historic monument, it is today the oldest church in Alsace dedicated to Saint James the Greater. Its location is significant: Feldbach was a crossroads of ancient routes used by pilgrims on their way to Compostela. These travelers, mainly from the Palatinate, often passed through Strasbourg before reaching this emblematic site. After a complete restoration, the church was solemnly inaugurated on July 3, 1977, by Monsignor Brand, auxiliary bishop.
