Abbey Church of Saints Peter and Paul

Founded in 1049 by Count Rodolphe of Altenbourg on his Ottmarsheim estate, this Benedictine abbey was consecrated by the Alsatian Pope Leo IX. Its unique octagonal architecture makes it a smaller replica of the Palatine Chapel of Aachen, a masterpiece of Ottonian art. The building's history has been marked by numerous fires since 1272, but each restoration has revealed exceptional frescoes dating from the 11th and 15th centuries. A major fire in 1991 caused significant damage, requiring extensive restoration work completed in 1999, restoring its original splendor. Listed as a Historic Monument, the abbey is located on the Alsace Romanesque Route and offers guided tours in French and German year-round by reservation.
