Abri Museum

Just one kilometer behind the Maginot Line, the Abri once served as barracks for the casemate crews during World War II. It could accommodate around 240 beds.

Today, 28 rooms have been restored, some preserved in their original state, others converted into exhibition rooms. The site also offers a significant collection of military equipment covering the period from 1939 to the present day, a room dedicated to models, a space devoted to the "Malgré-Nous," and a hall presenting exclusively American or German equipment from 1939 to 1945. The displays notably evoke the January 1945 battle at Hatten, where intense fighting took place between Germans and Americans from January 9 to 21 during Operation Nordwind.

This offensive made Hatten and the neighboring village of Rittershoffen major combat zones, with 85% of the villages destroyed and 83 civilian victims in Hatten, 31 in Rittershoffen.

Outside, the Wood of Remembrance pays tribute to the 114 civilian victims of the two communities with 114 trees planted. Since 2021, a specially arranged room exhibits part of the collection from the former JOST museum, once located at Air Base 901 in Drachenbronn.
