Alpine Ambulance Museum

The Alpine Ambulance, a former French military hospital, treated wounded soldiers and civilians between 1915 and 1918. Now restored, it has housed since 2015 an interpretation center dedicated to the war in the Munster valley. Volunteers offer guided tours of the exhibition, allowing visitors to discover this historic site and its role during the conflict.

Mittlach, the only village in the valley to return to French control as early as April 1915, became a strategic base near the front. The Battle of Metzeral, from June 15 to 21, 1915, devastated the valley before the front stabilized between Metzeral and Muhlbach. In July 1915, the Mittlach town hall-school was converted into a first aid post after reinforcing the cellar walls. The Alpine Ambulance received wounded military personnel and civilians there, while also serving as a propaganda tool for the army health service. Despite reduced fighting, it remained active until the end of the war.

Today, the restored site includes an interpretation center and a memory trail exploring the war's impact on humans, whether combatants or civilians.
