Altenweiher Lake

Perched at 926 meters above sea level in the heart of the Mittlach valley, Altenweiher Lake covers 7.5 hectares. Surrounded by the iconic peaks of Kastelberg and Rainkopf, this body of water owes its existence to an impressive dam built between 1886 and 1889. This structure, 112 meters long, 15 meters high, and 4 meters wide at the top, holds back 70,000 cubic meters of water, giving it the status of a reservoir. The lake's maximum depth reaches 14 meters.

Accessible on foot from the village of Mittlach, the hike to the lake takes about an hour. A shorter alternative exists from the ridges, with a descent of around 45 minutes.

According to local legend, a golden carriage sank in its waters.
