Altorf

Altorf is a charming Alsatian village located near Molsheim, about twenty kilometers from Strasbourg. Crossed by the ancient Roman road linking the European capital, it stands out for its heritage and preserved landscapes, while remaining off the Alsace Wine Route. Nature and history enthusiasts will find plenty to enjoy with marked hiking trails and safe bike paths, ideal for exploring the region on foot or by bike.

The Benedictine Saint-Cyriaque Abbey, founded in 974 by Count Hugues III of Eguisheim-Dabo, is one of the village's gems. Its architecture reveals a remarkable harmony between two eras: the Romanesque nave, built between the 12th and 13th centuries, and the Baroque transept and choir, added in the 18th century. Inside, visitors can admire the reliquary bust of Saint Cyriaque as well as a Silbermann organ. The carefully restored monastic gardens invite leisurely strolls: the herbularius (medicinal plant garden), the hortus (vegetable garden), and the pomarium (orchard) recreate the peaceful atmosphere of the monks. The site of the former cloister is marked, enhancing the sense of serenity that pervades the place.

To extend the discovery, a walking tour allows visitors to explore the village and its surroundings, offering a complete immersion in this authentic and preserved setting.
