Appenwihr

Appenwihr first appears in records in 884 under the name Abbenwilari. Over the centuries, the village followed the fate of the lordship of Horbourg, then the counts of Württemberg and the lords of Rathsamhausen. Its history is marked by hardships: destroyed during the Thirty Years' War, it suffered a major fire in 1752, then was bombed and reduced to ruins during World War II. Despite these trials, Appenwihr preserves traces of its past. The Church of Saint Anthony, built between the 16th and 17th centuries, reflects its architectural heritage. The town hall-school, built in 1752, recalls the reconstruction after the disaster. The Castle of the Knights of Malta evokes a historical presence, while the Commonwealth graves from 1941 pay tribute to soldiers who fell during World War II.
