Aquatic Maginot Line Fortification

Herbitzheim preserves traces of the aquatic Maginot Line, notably the Grand Dam, designed to close off the Sarre valley by creating a large water reservoir to prevent any enemy advance.

Although the cannons and underground tunnels are no longer visible, remnants of the structure and some period weapons can be seen. The recently restored defense bunker is also open to the public.

These elements are showcased during guided tours held in summer, specifically in July and August, as well as during the European Heritage Days, which take place annually on the third weekend of September. Members of the Herbitzheim local history group lead these tours and provide explanations about the purpose, operation, and facilities of these military works.
