Aschenbach Casemate

Dive into the military history of Upper Alsace by visiting the Aschenbach casemate, an iconic structure of the Maginot Line built on the eve of World War II. Part of the "Sundgau link," a network of fortifications designed to protect the territory between the Rhine and the Alsatian Jura, this casemate illustrates the defensive measures implemented in the 1930s to secure the region against external threats. Constructed of reinforced concrete, it housed about twenty soldiers in 1940 and was equipped with firing positions, machine guns, and an armored observation cupola, reflecting the military strategies of the time.

Now restored, the Aschenbach casemate offers visitors the chance to discover the internal organization of a military fortification and immerse themselves in the living conditions of the soldiers stationed there. The visit continues with the exploration of the neighboring Chemin-Creux casemate, as well as a turret shelter and a museum space dedicated to Alsace's history during World War II. Through objects, equipment, and historical documents, this tour helps to better understand the events that shaped the region in the 20th century and preserves local memory.
