Baërenstall Cemetery

The German military cemetery of Hohrod-Bärenstall is a memorial site dedicated to German soldiers of the First World War.

Located on the border of the Orbey and Hohrod communes, it is near the battlefields of the Linge, where intense fighting took place. This site holds the graves of 2,460 German soldiers who fell during the clashes around the Faux and the Linge. Among them, 1,518 rest in individual graves, while 942 others are grouped in a collective ossuary.

Originally created in 1916 at the foot of Schratzmännele by Bavarian troops, the cemetery was then located in a different place from the one known today.

After the war ended, French authorities relocated it and gathered the remains of soldiers exhumed from provisional German cemeteries scattered across the region. From 1928 onwards, the site was redeveloped under the auspices of the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge, the German organization responsible for the maintenance of military graves.
