Baldenheim
Baldenheim, nestled 8 km east of Sélestat, lies within the Ried, a natural area with varied landscapes and preserved biodiversity. The village invites you on a heritage walk with the "Through Baldenheim" circuit, a roughly 40-minute route starting from the town hall. You will discover typical half-timbered houses, old barns, and remnants of past artisanal and agricultural activities, reflecting a rich local history. For a fun family exploration, the treasure hunt "The Mysteries of the Ried - Baldenheim" offers puzzles to solve in the village and its immediate surroundings.
The jewel of Baldenheim remains its historic church, classified as a historic monument since 1970. Dating from the late 11th or early 12th century and documented in 1371, it embodies early Romanesque architecture. Its choir houses unique medieval frescoes in Alsace, created in the 15th century in the style of the Schongauer school. After adopting the Reformation in 1576, the church became Protestant, then was shared between Catholics and Protestants during the simultaneum from 1749. Catholics retained the choir until a new church was built in 1938. The current building, while featuring some Romanesque elements, is mainly Gothic and preserves traces from all periods of its construction.
