Batzendorf

Nestled just five kilometers from Haguenau and about twenty from Strasbourg, Batzendorf is a rural village that harmoniously combines tradition and modernity. With a population of 993 and an area of 690 hectares, it is part of the Haguenau Agglomeration Community and maintains a twinning with Laizé in Burgundy.

The village is home to a remarkable church with an onion dome bell tower, built in 1781 and dedicated to Saint Arbogast. This architectural heritage is complemented by a dynamic local economy, notably thanks to its two gravel pits. One of them extracts sands with varied properties – quartz, clay, gravel, and topsoil – which are used in the construction, ceramics, and chemical industries. Quartz sand, in particular, is sought after for its multiple uses: tile making, masonry, foundry work, aquariums, golf courses, filtration, glassmaking, and hydraulic cutting.

Batzendorf is also known for its diversified agriculture, with about ten local farms producing hops, raspberries, oyster mushrooms, and asparagus. On the services side, the village offers a variety of shops and crafts: medical care, local shops, and a hotel-restaurant, meeting the daily needs of its residents and visitors.
