Bed of the Old Ill

Before the construction of the Ill canal, the region relied on a network of natural waterways, such as the Ill itself and its tributaries.

These waterways played a key role in transporting goods, especially for local agricultural and commercial activities.

However, their winding paths and irregular flow limited their efficiency.

Residents also depended on these resources for land irrigation and water supply.

The absence of an artificial canal like the one later planned made travel and trade slower and less reliable, while making some areas less accessible.
