Bollenberg Chapel
The Bollenberg is a 363-meter-high hill made of Jurassic limestone, located between the villages of Rouffach, Orschwihr, and Westhalten. Every year, on the night of August 14 to 15, it attracts many pilgrims for a traditional ritual. The small Sainte-Croix chapel, accessible via a narrow, steep alley east of Orschwihr, lights up with the famous "witches' fire." It is the conscripts of Orschwihr who burn a witch effigy on a spectacular pyre there.
Outside of this event, the Bollenberg is especially popular with hikers, as it hosts a small protected natural area. To the east of the hill, accessible from the D18, is the "Clos Sainte-Apolline" vineyard estate, which offers a hotel-restaurant.
The Sainte-Croix chapel, often called the "witches' chapel," was once a very frequented pilgrimage site. It is surrounded by legends, including one of an apparition of the "White Lady," suggesting it was once an ancient place of worship.
