Bruat Fountain
This fountain, erected in honor of Admiral Armand-Joseph Bruat (1796-1855), a native of Colmar, is a creation by Auguste Bartholdi inaugurated in 1864.
It was the first in Colmar to operate with a continuous water jet system.
Representing allegories of the four continents, the bronze statue was unfortunately destroyed by the Nazis in 1940.
A restoration was undertaken in 1958: the statue was placed on a new fountain designed by sculptor Choain and architect Porte.
The original heads, carved in sandstone, are now preserved at the Bartholdi Museum. According to the writings of Albert Schweitzer, the head of the Africa allegory inspired his vocation as a bush doctor.
