Catholic Church of Scharrachbergheim

In 1893, the simultaneum in Scharrachbergheim ended after centuries of sharing the church between Catholics and Protestants.

The Protestants were assigned a separate place of worship, while the Catholics left the shared building to construct a new one. Between 1893 and 1894, they built the parish church of Saint John the Baptist in a neo-Gothic style, as evidenced by the dates engraved on the entrance arch of the nave, the sacristy door, and the lower church door.

Some elements of the former Catholic church, which became a Protestant temple, were reused in this new building. The Saint John the Baptist church is notable for its unusual orientation and construction on a steep slope. Its walls are entirely made of red sandstone, quarried from Soultz-les-Bains. The building features a separate bell tower, a nave with three bays, and a narrow choir.
