Château de l'Erlenburg in Romanswiller
In the 16th century, the village of Romanswiller was divided among several entities: the Free City of Strasbourg, the Bishopric of Strasbourg, and the Bock family, a branch of Strasbourg nobility named after the Château de l'Erlenburg.
Upon the death of the last heir of this lineage in the 17th century, Strasbourg bought the shares held by the Bock family as well as those of the Bishopric. Shortly after, the Château de l'Erlenburg, along with the village, became the property of the Austrian Barons Haindel.
Abandoned and in ruins, the castle was eventually dismantled in 1872 by its new owner. Today, the site of the former village and fortress is occupied by the Toscano estate. Jean-Baptiste Weber built an elegant country house there, whose large park extends over the former castle grounds, thus recalling the eventful history of this place.
