Château des Rohan Museum
The Château des Rohan Museum in Saverne offers a journey through local history with rich and varied collections. The visit is divided into three distinct sections: art and history, Louise Weiss, and archaeology.
The art and history section features paintings, polychrome wooden sculptures from the 15th and 16th centuries originating from regional churches, as well as a room dedicated to the history of the castle. The Louise Weiss section highlights this Alsatian figure, journalist and European activist, whose donations in 1981 and 1983 enriched the museum with ethnographic objects, paintings, drawings, and personal archives. The rooms dedicated to her trace her early commitment to European integration, notably through her magazine L’Europe Nouvelle (1919-1934).
The archaeological section, located in the vaulted cellars of the castle, houses an important Gallo-Roman stone collection. Major pieces include funerary and votive steles, some of which were incorporated into the stone enclosure built at the beginning of the 4th century. This collection is the second largest in Alsace after that of the Strasbourg Museum.
The museum regularly organizes temporary exhibitions. Visits to the museum and access to the castle roof are available upon request. Combined access fees are €5 for adults and €4 for students.
