Chestnut Tree

This chestnut tree, classified as a monument tree by the Alsatian Sites Conservatory, is probably over a thousand years old.

Standing 13.5 meters tall with a circumference of 5.40 meters, it represents a remarkable natural heritage.

Introduced to Alsace by the Romans, this tree produces highly valued wood as well as chestnuts that have contributed to the fame of Pfaffenheim.

It grows on the edge of a forest made up of black locust trees, whose durable and rot-resistant wood is traditionally used to make vine stakes.
