Chicken Coop
Discover about ten Alsace chickens in the collective Dubach chicken coop, managed by the Vallée de Munster en Transition association.
This local breed is distinguished by its proud appearance, pearl comb, and cylindrical body.
It is a dual-purpose poultry, raised both for its meat and eggs, of medium size: the rooster weighs about 2.5 kg while the hen reaches 1.8 kg.
Hardy and well adapted to the sometimes harsh climate of northeastern France, the Alsace chicken has lived in the region since ancient times.
Its official standard was established at the end of the 19th century, marking the beginning of more rigorous selection.
This breed experienced its golden age until the 1930s before declining due to the arrival of Anglo-American varieties and hybrid chickens, selected for their increased productivity.
It bears strong similarities to the Rhineland chicken, its German neighbor.
