Church of Emm
The World War I memorial church in Metzeral, also known as the Alsatian Remembrance Monument, honors the Alsatian soldiers who fell during the 1914-1918 conflict, with special attention to the victims of the Battle of Metzeral in June 1915. This memorial site also serves as the parish church of Metzeral-Sondernach and is part of an ancient religious tradition.
According to local legend, the Church of Emm is named after Emma, Charlemagne's niece, and Roland of Roncevaux, who are said to have met there and shared a legendary love.
For centuries, it has been an important pilgrimage site dedicated to the Virgin Mary, venerated under two titles: Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows, referring to a 16th-century pietà displayed on site, and Our Lady of the Snows.
