City Moat - Stadtgraben

The Stadtgraben of Marckolsheim is a water-filled moat that stands as the last remnant of the city's old fortifications.

These ramparts, whose construction began in 1330, were once protected by two fortified gate towers called porch towers: the Strasbourg Gate to the north and the Brisach Gate to the south. Today, traces of the northern gate can still be seen on the bridge spanning the moat.

Over the centuries, these walls suffered several damages: partially destroyed in 1637, they were finally demolished around 1835, leaving only this moat as a testament to their existence.
