Collegiate Church of St. Michael
The former collegiate church of Saints-Michel-et-Gangolphe reflects a rich and eventful architectural history. Its origins likely date back to the 11th century for the nave, while the transept, choir, and flat apse date from the 12th century. The building has thus preserved characteristic features of Romanesque art, visible in its proportions and original structures.
Over the centuries, the church underwent several transformations. One of the most significant occurred in 1859, when the entire building was completely restored. This renovation campaign, led by a 19th-century architect, introduced new elements such as the towers, whose style sometimes contrasts with the medieval aesthetic. Despite these additions, the overall harmony of the building remains intact, although some details spark debate among experts.
Today, the collegiate church is distinguished by its vaulted porch, considered one of the most remarkable in the region. To explore this heritage, guided group tours are organized year-round by appointment with the Guebwiller Tourist Office.
