Court of Appeal
This iconic building, inaugurated in 1906, was designed to house the Oberlandesgericht, the supreme court of the Reichsland, which had outgrown the old palace of the sovereign council.
Construction began in May 1902 on the site of a former experimental vineyard managed by the horticulture and viticulture society. Architects Kuder and Müller gave it a characteristic German neo-baroque style of the era.
Colmar, the regional judicial capital since 1698, has hosted various superior courts following the Revolution, depending on the political regimes.
After the annexation of Alsace by Germany, the Oberlandesgericht was established here before being replaced in 1918 by the Superior Court of Alsace-Lorraine. This court became the Court of Appeal in 1923, still occupying this building, which remains the highest judicial authority in Alsace.
