Dieffenthal
Perched between vineyards and mountains, Dieffenthal overlooks the Alsace plain from the Wine Route. The village offers an exceptional panorama of the plain, the Haut-Koenigsbourg castle, and the Ortenbourg castle.
Its emblematic site, the Celts' Rock, is a cup-marked stone steeped in legends. According to tradition, it served as a birthing seat in Celtic times.
Every winter, usually on the eve of the first Sunday of Lent, the "Schieweschlauje" takes place here, a flaming disc throwing event to chase away winter and celebrate the arrival of spring.
The Saint Michael Church, built in the 18th century on the foundations of an older sanctuary, was expanded in the early 19th century. It is distinguished by its sculpted volute portal. Nearby, a medieval garden with medicinal plants invites discovery, while the village houses several 17th and 18th-century homes.
For a family visit, the treasure hunt "The Mysteries of Dieffenthal" offers puzzles to solve. From Dieffenthal, it is possible to explore the Wine Route or take the Alsace vineyard cycle route, a nearly 140 km bike path crossing vineyards and villages.
Finally, the association of the 10 Tourist Communes of Haut-Koenigsbourg organizes every year, on July 25th for Saint James Day, a ten-kilometer walk on the Camino de Santiago. This hike, accessible to people in good physical condition, allows discovery of the area's landscapes.
