Donnerloch Mine

The first extractions at the Donnerloch mine date back to around 1250, when miners exploited cerussite and pyromorphite, a practice still rare in the region at that time. This historic site, still partly unexplored, holds major technical mysteries: the methods used to drain the shaft, dug below the water table, remain unknown today. Since 1991, the Mining Archaeology Group "Les Trolls" has been conducting archaeological excavations on site to document a copper and lead mining operation from the 15th century. These ongoing studies gradually shed light on the technical and human history of this exceptional place.
