Ebersheim

Nestled in the heart of Alsace, in the Ried region north of Sélestat, the village of Ebersheim charms visitors with its authentic character and heritage treasures. Strolling on foot or by bike through its streets, you can marvel at more than thirty protective niches scattered on house facades, barns, or tobacco drying sheds. These small cavities or glassed-in boxes house statuettes of the Holy Family, saints such as Odile or Anthony of Padua, or the Virgin Mary. Originally, these niches served to protect homes from fires, an essential precaution in a village with many barns and tobacco drying sheds. A tip: take time to look up and observe to not miss these expressions of popular piety.

The Saint Martin Church, listed as a supplementary historical monument since 1984, embodies the village's rich past. Dating from the 18th century, it reflects the Alsatian religious architecture of the time. Nearby, the Notre-Dame chapel adds a spiritual touch to this peaceful setting.

To extend your walk, the Goutte d'Eau interpretive trail offers a 3.5 km route that is both tourist-friendly and educational. Four information panels along the path highlight four emblematic nearby sites: the Loch, the fishing pond, the irrigated meadows, and the mill. This trail invites visitors to better understand the importance of water in the region and its role in daily life.

Just steps from this trail, the Kircher mill, founded in 1748 and still operational, offers a dive into artisanal history. Visit it to discover the secrets of traditional flour production and admire an industrial heritage still in motion.
