EDF Hydroelectric Power Plant

Inaugurated in 1932, the Kembs hydroelectric power plant is the first link in the Rhine development chain designed by engineer René Koechlin. Built between 1928 and 1932 by the company Énergie Électrique du Rhin, it is part of the Grand Canal of Alsace project, marking the start of a vast industrial and landscape development program for the region.

Located on the Grand Canal of Alsace, the plant operates run-of-the-river with six production units: two Kaplan turbines and four propeller turbines, with a total capacity of 150 MW. The development also includes a dam, a lock, and a fish pass, ensuring both energy production and ecological continuity.

Its main building, in Art Deco style, is renowned for its remarkable architecture and received the "Remarkable Contemporary Architecture" label in 2015. Damaged during World War II, the plant was rebuilt in 1946, demonstrating its resilience and strategic importance.
