Esch Casemate
Perched on the edge of the village of Hatten, the Esch casemate museum immerses visitors in the turbulent history of this iconic site.
It first illustrates its integration within the Maginot Line, then its involvement during the 1939-1940 campaign.
But it is especially its role in the Battle of Hatten-Rittershoffen in January 1945 that leaves a strong impression: this was the last major tank battle of World War II, where the casemate was successively attacked by German and American forces.
The scars of these fierce battles are still visible on the building, bearing witness to its troubled past.
Occupied in 1939-1940 by the 23rd Fortress Infantry Regiment, the Esch Infantry Casemate thus offers a poignant testimony to the conflicts that marked the region.
