Eschau Monastic Garden

In keeping with medieval tradition, this monastic garden gathers medicinal plants with sometimes real, sometimes legendary virtues. For seven and a half centuries, Benedictine nuns cultivated nourishing and healing plants right next to the abbey church. They used these plants to treat the sick within the abbey, local residents, and pilgrims welcomed at the monastic hospital.

Covering an area of 10 ares and arranged in a checkerboard pattern, the garden displays nearly 400 species listed in the field of pharmacopoeia, whether of medieval or modern origin. Visitors delight in discovering the riches of botany and the history of pharmacopoeia, while also being introduced to the symbolism and even the mystical dimension that permeates this green space.

This site, listed in the Alsace Gardens network and labeled "Remarkable Garden," appeals to botanists, history enthusiasts, and all nature lovers. It can be visited throughout the seasons to admire its medicinal treasures and the blooming of its flowers.
