Former Collegiate Church of Saint-Arbogast

The Saint-Arbogast Church in Surbourg is named after Saint Arbogast, the first bishop of Strasbourg, whose relics were transferred there in the 10th century. This translation of relics prompted the construction of the building in the 11th century, marking the emergence of the first Romanesque art in Alsace. Located on the Alsace Romanesque Route, it stands alongside other emblematic monuments such as the Saints Peter and Paul Abbey in Wissembourg and the Saint Ulrich Church in Altenstadt.

The church features a basilica plan with three vaulted naves ending in a transept and apse vaults in a half-dome shape. Inside, the large arches rest on varied supports: columns topped with cubic capitals alternate with masonry pillars with simple imposts. The exterior is built of small stones combining red and gray sandstone, giving the building a distinctive aesthetic, especially on the nave and the chevet of the north apse chapel. The facing of the interior nave pillars also shows carefully crafted decorative stonework.
