Former Site of Saint-Etienne Church

Long before the construction of the current Saint-Etienne Temple, a Catholic church stood on the Place de la Réunion, then called Stephanplatz. Its foundations date back to the 10th century, reflecting Mulhouse's ancient religious history. The cemetery associated with this church was moved in 1559 to the Sainte-Marie church.

When the Reformation was adopted in Mulhouse, the church was converted into a Protestant temple. This site then became a significant political and religious center for the city.

However, in 1859, the building was demolished to make way for the current Saint-Etienne Temple. Today, the location of this former church is marked by gray cobblestones laid out on the Place de la Réunion.
