Fort de Schoenenbourg - Maginot Line
The Fort de Schoenenbourg, located in Hunspach – voted Favorite Village of the French in 2020 – is a massive artillery fort of the Maginot Line, built between 1931 and 1935.
Situated 30 meters underground, it extends nearly three kilometers of underground galleries, all originally equipped: power plant, kitchen, barracks, engine room, and, of course, the impressive combat blocks.
This fort, the most heavily bombed of the Maginot Line, was never defeated and only surrendered on orders from the High Command.
Since the 1980s, a team of passionate volunteers has restored the site, which can now be visited as a complete, preserved, and living military installation.
Ranked the second Favorite Monument of the French in 2022, Fort de Schoenenbourg is much more than a relic: it is a place of memory, history, and emotion.
