Fortified Bridge

The town of Kaysersberg is crossed by the Weiss, a 24-kilometer river running through its heart. To cross this waterway and connect the old town to the upper town, separated by the river, an initial wooden bridge was built.

In 1514, it was replaced by a fortified stone bridge designed to prevent any enemy intrusion via the river.

This defensive bridge is notable for its loopholes and parapets pierced with arrow slits and cannon openings. At its center stands a small structure housing a polychrome statue of the Virgin and Child. Originally, this space was used to imprison residents guilty of minor offenses, exposing them to public view.

To admire this historic monument from its best angle, take the pedestrian walkway located to the left of the Badhus.
