Freudeneck Castle

Perched on a ridge of Schlossberg at 390 meters altitude, near the village of Wangenbourg, Freudeneck Castle overlooks the Mossig valley.

Now reduced to ruins, it once served as a watch post, tasked with alerting the nearby Wangenbourg Castle in case of danger.

The visible remains are modest but evocative: a circular stone keep with bossage stands at the center of the former fortress, while the ruins of fortifications and the bailey recall its defensive past.

The fortified gate, likely preceded by a drawbridge, has disappeared over time.

Visitors have two options to reach the ruins. From Wangenbourg Castle, a marked trail crosses the forest and leads to the ruins after a short walk. For those preferring to drive, a road allows close access to the site, followed by a five-minute path to the ruins.

Access to the site is free and open year-round, inviting discovery of this discreet yet fascinating witness to local history.
