Gambsheim Locks
The Gambsheim locks, located on the Rhine, are a major structure for river navigation.
Their construction was made possible by the Franco-German agreement signed in Paris in 1969, and they entered service in 1974.
Managed by Voies Navigables de France, they are situated at kilometer point 309 on the Rhine, 16 km downstream from Strasbourg, after the exit from Lake Constance.
Measuring 270 meters long and 24 meters wide, they provide an average height difference of 10.65 meters, making them the largest locks on France's inland waterways. The associated hydroelectric facility is operated by CERGA, a subsidiary of EDF.
