General Rapp Monument

This bronze statue, dedicated to Empire General Jean Rapp (1771-1821), marks an important milestone in Auguste Bartholdi's career.

Created when he was only twenty years old, it was exhibited on the Champs-Élysées in Paris in 1854, then presented at the 1855 Universal Exposition.

Transferred to Colmar in 1856, it became a local symbol.

In 1940, the Nazi occupiers had it destroyed.

After the war, it was restored and placed back on an identical pedestal in 1948. Today, it still stands on Jean-Rapp Square, which was redesigned and pedestrianized in the summer of 2000.
