German Military Cemetery
Between 1914 and 1916, the Vosges ridges and the strategic site of Hartmannswillerkopf, nicknamed the "Old Armand" and located above Cernay, were the scene of extremely violent fighting. These intense clashes caused the deaths of many soldiers on both sides.
To honor their memory, a German military cemetery was built in 1920 in Cernay.
Its purpose was to gather the remains of German soldiers scattered across southern Alsace. Today, this memorial site holds over 8,000 graves, bearing witness to the scale of human losses suffered during these battles.
