Giant Oak of Morimont

To the best of the authors' knowledge, this majestic oak is the largest and oldest in Haut-Rhin. With nearly 7 meters in circumference, it impresses with its exceptional size. However, its health condition is average, a natural consequence of its advanced age and the evolution of its environment, now surrounded by a spruce forest that has gradually taken over the once open space where it grew.

Its sprawling appearance and great age reveal a past existence in a pasture landscape, before the forest settled in a few decades ago. Although located on private forest land, it remains clearly visible from the adjacent forest path.

This oak has endured through the centuries and witnessed major historical conflicts: it lived through the Peasants' War and was already well established during the Thirty Years' War. Nearby, the ruins of Morimont Castle add a historical and picturesque touch to this remarkable site.
