Graufthal

Perched at 200 meters above sea level, Graufthal stretches along the Zinsel du Sud valley, a tributary of the Moder, surrounded by forests and dominated by tall sandstone cliffs. Near La Petite-Pierre, the hamlet is crossed by the GR 53 long-distance hiking trail, which connects Wissembourg to Schirmeck, offering visitors varied landscapes and routes suitable for all levels.

Graufthal's history is marked by two iconic monuments: the old abbey, a witness to a religious and cultural past, and the semi-troglodyte houses carved into the rock, showcasing the ingenuity of former inhabitants.

Once a village of woodcutters, wood craftsmen, and wheelwrights, Graufthal has recently evolved, notably with the systematic removal of the Schopf, small wooden shelters characteristic of the region. Today, it attracts visitors with its authentic charm and preserved natural setting.
