"Grotte des Nains" Natural Climbing Site

The Grotte des Nains is primarily a place steeped in legends, but it is also a renowned climbing site known for its challenging routes. Located near Altkirch and Mulhouse, it stands out as the only natural climbing site in the Alsatian Jura, except possibly for Raemelsberg on the Franco-Swiss border. Climbers should be comfortable with a minimum level of 6b, as the easiest routes start at this grade. The site is classified as "adventure terrain," meaning each climber is responsible for their own safety and actions.

The cliff, about 25 meters high, faces northeast and extends about ten meters into a narrow gorge. Its orientation limits sunlight, and the "Tip Top" sector stays dry even during light rain. This sector, with its overhanging routes and formations, offers excellent rock quality. The Grotte des Nains is therefore an ideal summer cliff.

The site offers 15 routes and variations, ranging from 6b to 8a. Among the must-try routes are "Simplet" (6b+), "Tip-Top" (7b), "Sylphide" (7a), and "Allocations dégressives" (6c+). All routes are equipped with quickdraws featuring chains and carabiners at the top. The ideal climbing season runs from summer to autumn, although the site can sometimes be unusable in spring due to water resurgence.
