Hagueneck Castle

Nestled in a wooded valley near the Route of the Five Castles, this modest 13th-century small castle has had several lives. First remodeled in the 14th century, it was owned by Burkhard de Hagueneck, a vassal of the Bishop of Strasbourg, before being ravaged by conflicts and then rebuilt. Falling into disuse, it reappeared in the 17th century as the property of the Knights of Saint John before being sold as national property during the Revolution. Its rectangular plan is organized over three levels: a square keep, a main residential building, outbuildings, and a forecourt. Although classified as a Historic Monument since 1923, its role was always residential rather than defensive, protected by its isolated position at the bottom of a valley and far from major routes.
