Hartmannswiller
Perched on the Alsace wine route, between fertile hills and the imposing silhouette of the Vieil Armand, the village of Hartmannswiller offers a journey through time. Despite massive destruction during the First World War due to its proximity to the Hartmannswillerkopf battlefield, it retains a rich architectural heritage. Its fortified cemetery, the only example of its kind in Alsace alongside Hunawihr, bears witness to its defensive past and resilience. Nearby, the Hartmannswiller castle, surrounded by greenery, recalls the noble origins of the place, linked to the Hartmanswilr family.
Strolling through the lanes, one discovers rural crosses and fountains punctuating the landscape, while old houses with door lintels dated from the 16th and 17th centuries line the streets. These homes, along with the 15th-century Gothic church, give the old part of the village an authentic and preserved atmosphere.
Despite the trials of the past, Hartmannswiller remains a charming and historic gem, where every stone tells a part of the Alsatian soul.
