Haut-Andlau Castle
Perched to the north over the Kirneck and Barr valleys, and to the south over the Andlau valley, this fortress is distinguished by its two imposing towers. Built between 1337 and 1344 by the lords of Andlau, the upper castle, lacking a courtyard, was designed to withstand attacks with an entrance arranged as a series of traps. The lordly residence housed forest guards until 1796, marking the end of its continuous occupation. Today, the Friends of the Andlau Castle association organizes guided tours for groups, subject to the availability of its members. For more information, the association can be contacted at info@chateaudandlau.com. Access is from Barr via the RD 854 towards Mont Sainte-Odile. After five kilometers, turn left to reach the parking lot of the Hungerplatz Forest House, then follow the marked trails with red crosses for about an hour's round-trip walk.
