Hirn Monument
Gustave Adolphe Hirn (1815-1890), originally from Colmar, distinguished himself as a physicist, astronomer, mathematician, and philosopher. His major contributions in thermodynamics and his research on petroleum extraction techniques make him one of the pioneers of modern industry.
A bronze statue, created by Auguste Bartholdi, pays tribute to this great scientist.
It depicts him seated at his lectern, a member of the Institute, and was inaugurated in 1894, only four years after his passing.
