Historic Church
Built on an ancient necropolis, the first church of Baldenheim likely dates back to the late 11th or 12th century. The current building, although featuring some Romanesque elements, is mainly Gothic and reflects all phases of its construction. Its archaeological significance is highlighted by numerous burials, while its medieval wall paintings are among the best preserved in Alsace. The frescoes in the nave date from the 14th century, while those in the choir, attributed to Martin Schongauer and probably created during his lifetime, were completed at the end of the 15th century. After the adoption of the Reformation in 1576, the church became Protestant. In 1749, Catholics regained possession of the choir, sharing the building with Protestants until the inauguration of a new Catholic church in 1938, during which time the simultaneum was in effect.
