House of the "À l'Eléphant" Guild

This house was the headquarters of the "À l'Eléphant" guild, founded in 1583.

Its old sign, damaged during the Revolution, can still be seen, along with the coat of arms of the guild leaders that once decorated the door lintel.

Originally, guilds grouped traditional trades, and this one had 116 members: nearly a quarter in woodworking, 15% in leather, 14% in construction, 6% in metal trades, 5% in health, 3.5% artists, with the rest spread across various other professions.

To the left, a discreet passage houses a door frame dated 1600. The lintel bears a German inscription: "Her bevar den Eingang und Ausgang von nun an bis in ewig," which can be translated as "Lord, protect those who enter and leave this house from now and forever."
